The mission of the Department of Humanities is to promote humanistic study for the purpose of understanding the cultural, social, and scientific contexts that inform contemporary culture. The department takes as a unique focus investigation of the interrelationships among science, technology, and human values, thus aligning the department with NJIT’s role as a technological research university. Emphasis in the department is given to study in the following areas of teaching and research: the teaching of communication; the practice of ethics and applied philosophy; and the study of literature.
Because the department is committed to using the humanities as a coherent model for examining human society, it is dedicated to the university’s general university requirements (GUR) as a forum for undergraduate students to learn the value of humanistic education. Courses in composition, cultural history, literature, history, philosophy, STS (science, technology, and society), and technical writing are designed to increase the communication skills of NJIT undergraduate students while simultaneously deepening their understanding of the global culture of the 21st century. A systematic program of outcomes assessment allows the department to engage in an iterative process of assuring a high quality of faculty teaching and student learning.
The department offers degrees in the following areas: Professional and Technical Communication (BA, BS, MS) and Science, Technology and Society (BS). The department also offers, in conjunction with its partner institutions—Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey—the Masters of Public Health Degree. Extensive undergraduate and graduate education in English as a Second Language is also offered by the department as part of its mission to serve an emerging global culture in the 21st century.
