Did you know that you can use mathematics to understand:

• how the brain forms memories,
• how to design airplanes that are more fuel efficient,
• how to price stocks and bonds to maximize profits, or
• how to assess whether new medical procedures are really effective in curing patients?

The Department of Mathematical Sciences specializes in interdisciplinary training of students to answer such questions by focusing its curriculum on mathematical techniques that can be used on practical applications.

The department offers a BS degree in Mathematical Sciences with options in Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Mathematical Biology, and Mathematics of Finance & Actuarial Science. Recent graduates are working at places like Lucent Technologies, TIAA-CREF, IBM, and Chubb. Others are pursuing the Ph.D. degree at schools such as Columbia University, The University of Pennsyvania, and the University of Maryland.
