The Federated Department of History of NJIT and Rutgers-Newark offers a joint BA degree in History that draws upon the extensive course offerings and rich resources of both universities. History provides a solid foundation for a career in education (teaching certification is available) as well as for careers in law, politics, policy studies, business, journalism, and other fields. The combined NJIT and Rutgers history faculty includes many nationally and internationally known scholars, and NJIT offers a unique field of concentration in the History of Technology, Environment, and Medicine/Health. Because it has many "free" slots in its curriculum, history is ideally suited for students wishing to take a minor in another field or a double major, and standardized double-major curriculums are available with Science, Technology and Society; Professional and Technical Communications; and Information Systems. Another advantage of majoring in history at NJIT is the "personal touch:" the NJIT department chair serves as the advisor of all history majors and is happy to work with each student individually. Internships are available at the New Jersey Historical Society and other cultural institutions, and a thriving Rutgers-NJIT History Club invites speakers to campus and sponsors trips to interesting local sites.
There is a minor in History as well as a new minor in Legal Studies that is offered jointly by history and the STS program.
The Federated Department of History also administers a joint Rutgers-NJIT graduate program in history, which offers two joint degrees: the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Fields of concentration are available in American History, World History, and the History of Technology, Environment and Medicine/Health. Application is made to the program at Rutgers-Newark.
