Spring 2025

Dear HCSLA Community,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Spring 2025 semester! While the semester is already underway, I hope you have had a smooth start and are settling into the new year. As we embark on another exciting chapter together, I would like to share some important updates and developments within the College:

New Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education

I am pleased to announce that the HCSLA Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education position has been transitioned to a full-time role. Dr. Bruce Bukiet served in this position in a part-time capacity for almost 20 years, making a significant impact. Under his leadership, Dr. Bukiet championed academic excellence and advocated for undergraduate students. His deep connection with students has strengthened our bonds with them and fostered a culture of academic and personal growth. Dr. Bukiet will continue as a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, where he will undoubtedly continue to inspire, guide, and support our students.

Dr. Bhavani Balasubramanian has now assumed this role in a full-time capacity. She has been with NJIT for 15 years and has excelled in the Department of Chemistry & Environmental Science. As the department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies, she led curricular changes and developed new experiential learning courses, expanding student research and internship opportunities. She has also worked closely with faculty to support evidence-based, inclusive, and innovative teaching methods. Associate Dean for Graduate Education & Research

I am equally pleased to announce that the HCSLA Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research position has also transitioned to a full-time role. Dr. Linda Cummings, who has served in this role in a part-time capacity for the past nine years, will continue on in a full-time capacity.

Dr. Cummings' service to our College has been exceptional. She is also highly active in research and faculty mentorship, with extensive experience coordinating internal proposal competitions.

In her full-time role, Dr. Cummings will have the opportunity to fully realize the many important functions of this position. What she has accomplished in a part-time capacity is remarkable, and I look forward to seeing what she will achieve with a full-time focus. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Cummings.

College Strategic Plan and Implementation

The publication of the NJIT Strategic Plan 2030 presents an opportunity to envision HCSLA’s future as we develop an HCSLA 2030 Implementation Plan in service of the University's broader mission. However, it is also essential to recognize our achievements over the past five years.

The HCSLA 2020–2025 Strategic Plan set forth numerous goals. While too many to list in full, here are some key accomplishments:

  • 15% increase in undergraduate enrollment
  • 45% increase in master's enrollment
  • 5% increase in Ph.D. enrollment
  • 30% increase in undergraduate female enrollment
  • 13% increase in graduate female enrollment
  • 3% increase in female tenure/tenure-track (T/TT) faculty representation
  • 6% increase in underrepresented minority (URM) T/TT faculty representation
  • 5% increase in URM undergraduate student representation
  • 20% increase in URM graduate student representation
  • 200%+ increase in HCSLA research funding since FY20
  • 110+  HCSLA interdisciplinary grant proposal submissions since FY21

HCSLA continues to promote and excel in interdisciplinary research. Many of our faculty members have been named fellows and distinguished lecturers of prestigious professional societies, including the American Academy of Inventors, American Astronomical Society, American Chemical Society, Cullman Fellowship, Davis Center Fellowship, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Oceanic Engineering Society, and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Building on the expertise and guidance of our faculty and alumni, we have expanded our academic offerings and enhanced opportunities for our students. Key achievements include:

Campus Enhancements:

  • Renovation of instructional and research laboratories, lecture halls, and office spaces
  • Research & Experiential Learning
  • Home to two NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs

HCSLA continues to strengthen our partnerships with the community, state, and industry, providing expertise and assistance where needed. Collaborations like the Newark Math Success Initiative (MSI)—a joint effort between HCSLA, the Center for Pre-College Programs (CPCP), the City of Newark Mayor’s Office, and the Newark Board of Education—demonstrate our commitment to educational outreach. Our STEM for Success (S4S) program broadens participation in STEM, particularly among underrepresented groups, fostering community engagement and expanding access to STEM education.

HCSLA also remains engaged with the performing arts community through initiatives like the Theatre Arts and Technology (THAT) program, the Newark Playwrights Festival, the Short Film Festival, and various workshops.

These accomplishments are a testament to our dedicated faculty, staff, and students.

As we move into the future, it is important to keep the HCSLA Vision in mind: "To continue to be recognized as a preeminent college where research, teaching, and service to the community are innovative and conducted with the highest levels of creativity and excellence; that has a local and global impact on society; that is integrated in the process of economic development; that is engaged in society; that emphasizes and creatively integrates interdisciplinarity in all these activities; and that ultimately becomes a beacon for other institutions."

Together, we will make this semester both memorable and successful.

Sincerely,

Kevin D. Belfield

Last semester, CSLA reached another enrollment milestone, with over 1,200 students across all degree levels. In Fall 2022, CSLA had more female students than male students for the first time in our 40-year history. I am pleased to announce this trend has continued.

Today, 57% of CSLA undergraduate students and 53% of graduate students are female. These enrollment figures underscore our commitment to NJIT’s mission and core values. As we continue to expand, our increasing diversity and inclusivity stand as noteworthy accomplishments that will undoubtedly enhance and enrich our community.

The Right Question Institute Workshops

CSLA faculty, instructional and administrative staff are invited to participate in a series of collaborative workshops with the Right Question Institute throughout the course of the Spring 2024 semester. The goal of these workshops is to build institutional capacity in CSLA and NJIT to continuously support the development of question formulation skills for both learning and research purposes.

Please click here to learn more about these workshops, view the workshop schedule, and RSVP.

In closing, I want to express my sincere gratitude to you – our dedicated faculty, staff, and students – for your continued hard work. Your efforts are what makes our academic environment unique and exciting. My best wishes for a productive and pleasant semester.

Sincerely,

Kevin D. Belfield

Renovations and updates are in the works for other CSLA spaces to accommodate new faculty hires and our increasing student body. I will be sure to make further announcements as more details about these facility improvements become available.

Pandemic Recovery

The transition to in-person semester classes, studios, and labs first enacted on January 31, 2022, will continue for the Fall 2022 Term. We are extremely excited to have everyone back on campus. Throughout the pandemic, NJIT has acted strategically in promoting policies intended to promote the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff. The Pandemic Recovery Steering Committee continues to monitor COVID-19 conditions and will remain nimble in its approach to keep campus safe for living, learning, working, and research.

All students, faculty and staff are required to have the COVID-19 primary series and initial booster when eligible. Please note, in concert with current CDC guidance, NJIT also recommends the following:

  • Get tested if you have symptoms.
  • Students and employees should continue to report positive COVID-19 cases to Campus Health Services via covid.notify@njit.edu.
  • If you are immunocompromised or at high risk for severe disease, consider additional precautions
